Post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms vary in intensity and may be triggered or worsened by witnessing catastrophic events, notes Mayo Clinic. People suffering from PTSD may also experience physical pain or illness that has no obvious cause, says WebMD.
PTSD symptoms have four categories including intrusive memories, avoidance, negative changes in thinking and mood and changes in emotional reactions, reports Mayo Clinic. Negative changes in thinking and mood often cause hopelessness, negativity, trouble maintaining relationships and lack of interest in activities. Avoidance includes staying away from conversation topics, people, places and activities that bring up bad memories. PTSD develops as a combination of life experience, inherited mental health, temperament and the brain’s response to stress.
