Organizations that offer fitness certifications include the American Council on Exercise, American College of Sports Medicine and the National Exercise and Sports Trainers Association. They each offer a variety of certifications for personal trainers, nutrition and general fitness.
The American Council on Exercise, or ACE, is a popular organization that offers fitness certifications. It offers a certification to be a personal trainer or group fitness instructor in a fitness center. There are also certification programs and testing to be a health coach, which includes both fitness and nutrition. ACE offers a medical exercise specialist certification for people who want to work with clients who have different health issues and want to improve their physical fitness.
At the American College of Sports Medicine, or ACSM, there are clinical and health fitness certifications. The health fitness ones include the Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Exercise Physiologist and Certified Group Exercise Instructor certifications. Clinical certifications include Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist and Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist.
The National Commission for Certifying Agencies works closely with the National Exercise and Sports Trainers Association, known as NESTA, to provide certifications as a personal fitness trainer. Some topics in the coursework include flexibility, exercise physiology, injury prevention, kinesiology safety and nutrition.
