As of 2014, Ideal Protein products are not available online, according to the Greater New Orleans Times-Picayune. The pre-packaged weight loss foods that those following the diet must rely on during the first phase of the four-phase program are available only from an Ideal Protein weight loss center or from a health care practitioner who has entered into a partnership with Ideal Protein.
Ideal Protein is a low-fat, low-carbohydrate diet developed by Dr. Dr. Tran Tien Chanh, a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine in Paris, according to IdealProtein.com.
Dr. Chanh explains that a diet containing too much fat and simple carbohydrates causes overproduction of insulin. Insulin regulates blood sugar levels and helps transport and lock triglycerides into fat cells. Too much insulin causes hypoglycemia and severe hunger, while at the same time, excess insulin keeps fat locked away in fat cells where it cannot be used. This vicious cycle is broken when carbohydrates and fats in the diet are restricted, forcing the body to use up stored glycogen, or carbohydrate reserves. It turns instead to burning stored fats for energy, in a process called ketosis.
Ideal Protein says the program is more than just a collection of weight-loss foods designed to shift dieters into ketosis. It is a comprehensive weight-loss program in which dieters learn the relationship between insulin and weight, and how to maintain a fat-burning metabolism so that lost weight is not regained after the diet ends.
