Some options for relieving the pain caused by hammer toes include wearing proper footwear, doing toe exercises and wearing shoe pads or inserts, according to Mayo Clinic. For more severe cases, a doctor may recommend surgery.
Wearing low-heeled shoes with a deep toe box and flexible material over the toes may relieve the pain of hammer toes, explains Mayo Clinic. For best results, wear shoes with a half-inch space between the longest toe and the inside tip of the shoe. Certain exercises strengthen and stretch the toe muscles, such as picking up small or thin objects off the floor with the toes. Toe pain can also be eased by wearing shoe pads or inserts that reposition the toe. If none of these help, toe-straightening surgery may be performed.
