Onychoschizia refers to splitting, brittle, soft or thin nails, explains the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. The condition often causes horizontal splits within the nail plate and is a common problem seen by dermatologists.
According to SkinSight.com, the condition may affect nearly 20 percent of the population and is seen more frequently in women and older individuals. Those in occupations requiring frequent wetting and drying of the hands are also at increased risk.
In treating onychoschizia, patients are advised to be gentle on the nails, shaping the tips with a slight curve while filing regularly. Daily filing of snags or irregularities help to prevent further breakage and splitting, and oral biotin supplements may also prove beneficial, advises the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology.
