It is also helpful to alternate lying down with taking short walks that increase in distance over time. Over-the-counter medications may help alleviate the pain of sciatic nerve damage. These include acetaminophen, such as Tylenol, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Aleve and Advil.
A heating pad may also treat the pain associated with sciatica, according to WebMD. It is recommended for individuals to use the heating pad on low or medium for 15 to 20 minutes every two to three hours. A warm shower can also help in place of one of the heating pad sessions. Single-use over-the-counter heat pads may also bring relief. If the heat does not work, applying ice to the painful areas may help.
