Foods that are in the dairy group include cheese, milk, butter and yogurt; and foods included in the meat and beans group include, but are not limited to, beans, lentils and peas, beef, pork, poultry and fish, soy products, and nuts and seeds. Fruits listed include apples, bananas, berries, grapes, melons, oranges, raisins and 100 percent fruit juice; and vegetables listed include broccoli, carrots, green beans, lettuce, potatoes, spinach, tomatoes and 100 percent vegetable juice. Foods in the grain group include whole-grain breads, grits and rice, among other grains. Lastly, salad dressings, mayonnaise and vegetable oil are included in the oil group.
To plan a balanced diet, the New York Times recommends following the guidelines of the Food Guide Pyramid.
