People who have a high risk of developing heart disease should strive for 99 milligrams per deciliter or less, while people who already have heart disease or another disease that affects the blood vessels should keep their low lipoprotein values below 70 milligrams per deciliter.
People with undesirable cholesterol levels should exercise regularly, drink in moderation and quit smoking, advises Mayo Clinic. They should also maintain a healthy body weight and make healthy diet modifications, such as avoiding trans fats, eating more soluble fiber, choosing heart healthy fats and consuming omega-3 fatty acids.
