WebMD explains that the normal resting heart rate, also known as pulse rate, for men is 60 to 100 beats per minute. The resting pulse rate is measured after the individual has rested for 10 minutes. For well-conditioned athletes, the normal resting heart rate ranges from 40 to 60.

There is some dispute as to whether heart rates differ between men and women. A scientific study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology in 1994 indicates that the mean heart rate is the same for men and women. The study showed that high frequency heart rate power decreased with age in both men and women.
