What Are the Normal Blood Glucose Ranges for Diabetics?

While a normal fasting blood glucose level for a person without diabetes is 70 to 100 milligrams per deciliter, the American Diabetes Association recommends a target range of 70 to 130 for diabetics before meals, according to Mayo Clinic. After meals, the level should be below 180 milligrams per deciliter.

When patients have specific medical conditions, it is sometimes necessary for their doctor to personalize the targets for different goals, according to Mayo Clinic. Keeping the blood sugar levels within the target goals helps the individual avoid diabetic complications; however, it is important that the diabetic avoids serious low blood sugar levels. Maintaining blood sugar levels requires balancing medication, activity and foods, but blood glucose readings vary for many reasons, so even with tight control, they are sometimes out of the target range.
