Nioxin is a proprietary hair care system used by people with noticeably thinning hair, states the official company website. It is designed to cleanse, condition and treat the scalp using ingredients such as white tea extract, peppermint oil, vitamins, antioxidants and sunscreens.
The system is designed as three parts that work together, differing depending on the users hair type and concerns, notes Nioxin. The first step in the Nioxin system is the cleanse step. Shampooing is an important factor in the treatment of thinning hair. Consumers should choose a shampoo that doesn’t dry hair out causing it to break, explains WebMD.
The second step in the Nioxin system is to condition, and this can be done with a traditional conditioner or a leave-in treatment, states Nioxin. If using a leave-in treatment, people should make sure it is lightweight and contains a sunscreen. All hair products should be free of sulfates, such as sodium laurel sulfate, notes WebMD.
The only medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of hair loss or thinning hair are minoxidil, sold under the brand name Rogaine, and finasteride, sold under the brand name Propecia, explains WebMD. Minoxidil is available as an over-the-counter solution, but finasteride requires a prescription.
