New Direction protein shakes are good meal replacements when consumed as part of a medically supervised "Very Low Calorie Diet," according to Jefferson City Medical Group. On such a diet, dieters don't consume any actual food but only drink meal replacement shakes that total 600 to 1,000 calories per day.
New Direction shakes are designed to provide 100 percent of the recommended daily values for vitamins and minerals. These medically formulated shakes contain high-biologic value protein, but have a very low carbohydrate count, explains Jefferson City Medical Group. The New Direction Very Low Calorie Diet, referred to as VLCD, involves weekly supervision by nurses, monthly supervision by physicians and monthly lab work, as well as regular classes taught by dietitians, personal trainers and counselors.
