Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic that treats specific skin infections, such as impetigo. The directions instruct the patient to clean and dry the area of the skin to be treated. A small amount of Mupirocin should be applied three times daily unless otherwise instructed by a physician, according to WebMD.

It is important to use the medicine for the full-prescribed period of time as the infection could reoccur. It is suggested to avoid using the ointment around the mouth, eyes or nose unless instructed by a doctor. Large areas of broken skin should also be avoided. Further medical attention should be sought if the infection does not improve within five days.
