Garlic has antioxidant properties, can help stimulate blood flow and relax the blood vessels when roughly two cloves of fresh garlic are consumed daily, according to the New York Times. By boosting the body's production of hydrogen sulfide, garlic may protect against breast, colon and prostate cancers, a study shows.
To get the most benefit out of garlic, one may crush garlic and then allow it to sit for 15 minutes at room temperature before using, recommends Dr. David W. Kraus, as quoted in the New York Times. This exposure to oxygen triggers the production of an enzyme that boosts the healthy components in garlic. A 2007 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that garlic consumption may increase hydrogen sulfide.
