Fake braces, also referred to as fashion braces, cost about $100 as of 2013, the Huffington Post reports. The braces are largely an Asian trend resulting from the fact that real braces are a status symbol in countries such as Thailand and Malaysia.
Because real braces can cost up to $1,200, they're out of reach for many Asian teens. Those who wish to give the impression they're able to afford legitimate orthodontia purchase the fashion variety on the black market and fit them themselves. The braces are available in a variety of designer colors and designs. Thailand outlawed fashion braces after wearing them lead to the deaths of two youths, reports the Huffington Post.
