Patients in a study who took 5 grams of D-ribose three times a day for fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome experienced substantially reduced symptoms for both conditions, reports the National Center for Biotechnology Information. D-ribose, a natural pentose carbohydrate, produced improvements in well-being, energy, mental clarity, sleep and pain levels.
Although early research indicates D-ribose lessens chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia symptoms, there is a need for additional evidence to evaluate the effectiveness of D-ribose for these applications, notes WebMD. Diabetics taking insulin and D-ribose are cautioned that D-ribose decreases blood sugar and can cause a patient's blood sugar levels to become too low. Other diabetes medications that interact with D-ribose include pioglitazone, chlorpropamide and glipizide.
