Hypercalcemia, a condition in which calcium levels in the blood are too high, can also occur when a person ingests too much calcium, states Harvard Health Publications.
To prevent constipation when taking calcium supplements, people should include plenty of fiber in their diet, drink six to eight glasses of water per day, and remain physically active, advises the New York State Department of Health. Obtaining calcium from food sources is ideal, but individuals can also opt for calcium supplements with low levels of calcium per dose. Calcium carbonate typically has the highest amount of calcium per dose, while calcium citrate has the lowest.
