What Are Molar Bands?

Molar bands are thin metal rings that are placed on teeth to secure orthodontic attachments. Also known as orthodontic bands, they are wrapped around individual teeth and act as anchors to fasten parts of braces, such as buccal tubes, arch wires and other attachments used to reposition teeth.

The bands are made from stainless steel and are primarily used on posterior teeth. The right size must be determined for each particular tooth. A separator is first used to create space between teeth prior to the placement of a band. This is then fixed in place on the tooth using special dental cement.
