Milk may provide temporary relief for heartburn symptoms, states WebMD. However, it can cause more severe symptoms after a short period of time, because the fat in milk stimulates the stomach to produce more acid. It is therefore not a recommended remedy for heartburn.
Two common causes of heartburn are having too much food in the stomach or putting too much pressure on it, which can happen in pregnant women or obese individuals. Both causes disallow the lower esophageal sphincter to tighten properly, according to WebMD. Other causes of heartburn include certain types of food, such as coffee, chocolate, citrus fruits and garlic.
