According to WebMD, antibiotics can treat ear infections that are caused by bacteria. Doctors typically choose to prescribe amoxicillin when they prescribe an antibiotic because it is effective and costs less than other antibiotics. However, most children with ear infections get better without antibiotics.
According to WebMD, some doctors prefer using antibiotics to treat all ear infections due to not readily knowing which ear infections will get better on their own. Some other medicines that treat symptoms of ear infections include acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication for pain and fever. Antibiotics only minimally mitigate pain and fever. Ear drops may also be effective in helping with severe earache, but they should not be used in the event of a ruptured eardrum.
