Based on clinical trials and user surveys, Mederma products help to improve the appearance of old and new scars by as much as 50 percent. As of November 2014, Mederma markets five different products, each of which has had slightly different clinical results.
Mederma Advanced Scar Gel, the first product in the Mederma skin care line, has been shown to reduce the overall appearance of scars by 36 percent after eight weeks. These clinical results, published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology in June 2012, were based on a subject assessment of treated versus untreated scars. Improvement could be seen in the treated skin’s softness, redness and texture.
Mederma offers PM Intensive Overnight Scar Cream that works at night to provide faster results. A clinical trial referenced on the company website showed a 31 percent reduction in scar size after two weeks and a 50 percent reduction in scar size after the full eight weeks of Mederma use.
Mederma makes a scar cream with added SPF 30 and a special scar management product for kids. Clinical studies of both products have shown a significant improvement in skin’s softness, color, texture and overall appearance.
Mederma also offers a product designed to improve the appearance of stretch marks. An Investigator’s Assessment published in SKINmed: Dermatology for the Clinician (April 2010) and referenced on the company’s website showed a 40 percent improvement in overall appearance over a 12-week period. Seventy-six percent of women were satisfied with the results, more so than with any other leading stretch mark product.
