Some explanations for a stomach that is constantly growling include diarrhea, malabsorption issues and gastrointestinal obstruction, according to the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders. Excessive bowel sounds, also known as borborygmi, do not automatically indicate the presence of a disease, especially without other symptoms.
Diarrhea can cause excessive stomach growling because of faster peristalsis and increased accumulation of gas and fluid, which amplifies bowel sounds, according to the IFFGD. Certain types of malabsorption issues, such as lactose intolerance, can also cause an increase in the frequency and volume of bowel sounds. Gastrointestinal obstruction can lead to growling sounds as increased gastrointestinal contractions work to try to move stool and fluid through narrowed intestines.
