When people say their heart is fluttering, they mean they are having heart palpitations. These are most often non-threatening. A heart palpitation simply means the heart experienced an early or skipped beat that resulted in a heart hiccup.
Many people think these palpitations are the sign of a heart attack, when, in fact, heart attack symptoms very rarely include any type of fluttering or flipping sensations. If these palpitations continue or cause shortness of breath, the person should visit a doctor immediately to ensure that the palpitations are not the symptoms of a heart arrhythmia. However, simple heart palpitations are very rarely diagnosed as a serious heart arrhythmia.
