Overworked feet or feet that receive unusual exercise or activity often develop cramps, states Dr. Marino. Obesity can also put an additional burden on feet that leads to foot cramps. People with flat feet, pinched nerves, hormonal imbalances or dehydration can experience foot cramps. Foot cramps can develop when the blood fails to carry enough oxygen to the extremities, which often occurs in diabetics.
Foot and leg cramps can develop if there is a deficiency in mineral intake, according to Mayo Clinic. Potassium, calcium and magnesium deficiencies are often the culprits in these cases. Diuretics, which doctors often prescribe to treat high blood pressure, may deplete these minerals. Other medications that can cause foot cramps include certain remedies for Alzheimer's disease, Parkinsonism, asthma and high cholesterol, notes Dr. Marino.
To prevent foot cramps, the first thing to do is treat any underlying cause. Changing medications, increasing fluid intake, and eating foods rich in potassium, calcium and magnesium may be necessary, advises Dr. Marino.
