The average human in the United States walks approximately 5,900 steps per day. However, many pedometers and doctors suggest that people should walk, on average, 10,000 steps per day for optimal health.
Many doctors and researchers believe that people who walk 10,000 steps per day experience many health benefits. Walking 10,000 steps per day has been linked to lower blood pressures in women and lower blood glucose levels in overweight women. However the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention doesn't recommend that people strive for 10,000 steps per day. Instead, they suggest adults take part in at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week to stay healthy.
