The Red Hat Society has 20,000 chapters in the United States and 30 foreign countries, as of June 2015. Chapters average 20 to 25 members.
The Red Hat Society is based in Fullerton, California. An all-female social organization, it is geared towards connecting and encouraging women to pursue freedom, friendship and a more fulfilling life. Founded in 1998 by six friends who decided to wear red hats and purple clothes for afternoon tea, the organization was originally open to women 50 and over. As its popularity grew, the Society opened membership to women under age 50. Younger members wear pink hats and lavender clothes.
