Top End Sports says that an average healthy 27-year-old man should have a resting heart rate of 71 to 74 beats per minute. The Mayo Clinic says the normal adult resting heart rate range is fairly wide, between 60 to 100 beats per minute.

A number of factors can affect resting heart rate including body size and emotions, according to the Mayo Clinic. Air temperature and physical fitness can also affect the resting heart rate. In general, physical fitness decreases the resting heart rate. A very fit athlete may have a resting heart rate below 50 beats per minute, according to Top End Sports.
