Gatorade is brand of beverage created by PepsiCo that is packaged and marketed as a sports and performance drink. The original formulation of Gatorade was first developed by researchers at the University of Florida in 1965, and it was first manufactured and distributed by Stokely-Van Camp. The Quaker Oats Company bought the Gatorade brand in 1983 before it was purchased by PepsiCo in 2001.

The original formula of Gatorade, which included of water, lemon juice, sugar and sodium, was created to upon the request of University of Florida football coach Ray Graves. The drink was meant to help replace the bodily fluids lost by the football players during the games and practices. Gatorade started to gain popularity when the Florida Gators won the Orange Bowl in 1967.

The researchers initially wanted to name the drink Gator-Aid. However, since the beverage was to be distributed commercially, they settled on the brand name Gatorade to avoid branding issues with the United States Food and Drug Administration. Gatorade has since become one of the largest beverage brand in the world in terms of annual sales, being sold in more than 80 countries worldwide.
