Operation Smile was founded in 1982 by Dr. Bill and Kathy Magee after the couple went to the Philippines in a cleft repair mission. Since then, Operation Smile sends volunteers to more than 80 countries to assist in cleft related deformities. For extreme cases, the organization sends patients to Norfolk, Virginia where, as of 2007, about 200 patients have been treated. The organization uses celebrity ambassadors, such as Jessica Simpson, Roma Downy and Jackie Chan, to raise awareness of cleft issues.
