Burger King's Whopper has 650 calories according to the company's website. The sandwich consists of a quarter-pound beef patty, tomatoes, onion, lettuce, mayonnaise, ketchup and pickles on a sesame seed bun. Cheese, bacon, guacamole and mustard are available upon request and add additional calories to the sandwich.
Burger King introduced the Whopper in 1957 to compete with a rival restaurant that had a larger burger on its menu. The name was chosen to convey the size of the sandwich. After the success of the Whopper, other fast-food chains released similar products, although McDonald's did not introduce the Big Mac until 1967.
