There are three varieties of dates sold in the United States. One deglet noor date, the most common type, has about 66 calories, while a medjool or zahidi date has about 21 calories. Although they are relatively high in calories, dates can be part of a healthy diet.
Dates are low in fat and high in dietary fiber and essential minerals, such as potassium and manganese. They are also high in sugar; glucose and fructose can account for nearly 70 percent of a date's weight. Dates are the fruits of the gigantic date palm tree. Most dates in the United States are grown in California, Arizona and Florida.
