While it is accepted that chewing food takes effort and burns calories, the calories burned from chewing vary from person to person. According to Everyday Health, it is a common misconception that apples, and other foods, burn enough calories to have an impact on weight loss.

Everyday Health reports that it is a myth that eating any one of a variety of foods, including apples, cucumbers, celery and asparagus, causes weight loss because the calories burned from eating the food exceed the calories it provides. However, apples and many of the other foods that are commonly described in this way still have plenty of nutritional value and make for great snacks when hungry.
