How Many Calories Are Burned When Lifting Weights?

The precise number of calories a person burns when lifting weights depends on the duration and a person's weight. A 125 pound person working out for 30 minutes can expect to lose 90 calories; a 155 pound person, 112 calories; and a 185 pound person, 133 calories, according to the Harvard Medical School website.

People can increase the number of calories they burn with heavier weights. As evidence, a study, whose conclusions were published in the medical journal "Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise," found that women who lifted heavier weights but with fewer reps (a rep is a single motion, or repetition) had a greater calorie count burn, almost double, for the 2 hours post-workout than when they lifted less weight with more reps.
