The number of calories burned during exercise varies widely, from 204 while walking to 219 while bowling and even as high as 1,286 per hour for jumping rope or running eight mph, according to Mayo Clinic. The calorie burn also depends on the size/weight of the person who is exercising.

Diet can lead to quick weight loss, but exercise helps prevent the pounds from coming back, says Mayo Clinic. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommends a minimum of 30 minutes per day of moderate exercise such as walking, swimming or mowing the lawn or eight to 10 minutes a day of vigorous exercise such as running or aerobic dance.
