Low potassium levels -known as hypokalemia- and low iron levels -referred to as anemia- have different underlying causes and symptoms; low levels of either mineral can be potentially life threatening. A healthy, balanced diet limits the risk of both, explains Mayo Clinic.
Low potassium levels may be linked to kidney failure or chronic diarrhea. Decreased iron levels may be due to pregnancy and significant blood loss. Symptoms of hypokalemia include weakness and muscle cramps; anemia symptoms include, shortness of breath and fatigue and may not occur until levels are significantly low, according to Mayo Clinic. Persons not getting enough potassium and iron in their diet are advised to take supplements to boost these mineral levels.
