A toothache can cause severe pain indefinitely if it is not treated, according to the National Health Service of Britain. A toothache typically is caused by tooth decay and may progress to a dental abscess without treatment.

Tooth pain ranges from mild to severe when it begins, and it often gets worse at night, the NHS notes. The jaw around the affected tooth may be tender and sore. A toothache may be constant or can come and go, and eating or drinking may make it worse. A toothache that lasts for more than a day or two should be seen by a dentist for treatment. Toothaches that are not treated typically get worse and result in severe infection. Pain medicines, including ibuprofen, may be used for temporary relief of discomfort.
