Patients are usually able to resume normal activities within a week of having a liver biopsy, explains Mayo Clinic. During this week-long recovery period, patients should refrain from lifting anything that weighs over 10 pounds. Soreness at the needle-insertion site may also persist for up to one week.
Directly following a liver biopsy, patients rest quietly in a recovery room for between two and four hours, notes Mayo Clinic. During this time, a nurse or doctor monitors vital signs, such as heart rate and blood pressure. This monitoring period is longer for patients undergoing transjugular liver biopsies. Due to the lingering effects of the sedatives used during the procedure, patients must have someone drive them home from the hospital.
