According to, following surgical management of a miscarriage, a woman is usually released from the hospital the same day. If complications arise, the time spent in the hospital can vary widely.

WebMD explains that the causes of miscarriages are not well understood. It is believed that chromosomal abnormalities are the leading cause of miscarriage in the first trimester. Most chromosomal abnormalities arise from chance. Other causes of miscarriage include infection, uterine abnormalities and exposure to environmental hazards. WebMD warns that lifestyle factors, such as drinking, smoking and use of illegal drugs, may also lead to miscarriage. Older women are at increased risk for miscarriage.
