Hemorrhoids typically last less than a week with at-home treatments, according to the Mayo Clinic. If symptoms last longer than a week, the individual should seek medical treatment.
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins that sit on the anus and rectum. More than half of all adults develop hemorrhoids by the time they reach 50 years old, according the Mayo Clinic. Hemorrhoid symptoms include itching, swelling and discomfort around the anus. In cases where hemorrhoids lie inside the rectum, however, no discomfort is felt at all.
Painful hemorrhoids can be treated with hemorrhoid creams containing hydrocortisone, according to the Mayo Clinic. Acetaminophen, aspirin and ibuprofen may also provide relief. In addition, hemorrhoid sufferers should keep the anal area clean by washing the area with warm water daily. If these treatments are not successful, a physician may recommend surgery to treat hemorrhoids.
