It takes one to two hours for an orthodontist to apply most types of braces to a patient's teeth, according to Embrace-it! The orthodontist cleans and dries the teeth, applies bonding glue, attaches brackets and puts the archwire in place.
Before the orthodontist applies the braces, a patient may have several preparatory appointments, explains Dr. Jonathan Suzuki. The orthodontist must make an assessment of the situation, which involves taking X-rays and taking impressions of the teeth. Some patients must wear spacers for a few weeks to prepare their teeth for braces. Depending on the individual situation, the braces may be applied to the top teeth in one visit, and the bottom braces may be applied at a later time.
