Born and raised in Detroit, Mich., Murray attended Henry Ford High School and graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in political science. She began weight training in 1984 and entered the 1985 Ms. Michigan Championships bodybuilding competition with minimal training. After finishing fourth in the event, Murray fully dedicated herself to the sport. Rising through the amateur ranks, she earned professional status after winning the IFBB North American Championships. Succeeding Cory Everson, Murray won her first Ms. Olympia contest in 1990.
