Exercises to help treat trigger finger include stretching the affected finger against a hard surface, as well as flexing the muscles in the hand and wrist to help strengthen them. Treatment of trigger finger should loosen the finger and help reduce inflammation around the tendon.
Trigger finger occurs when the protective sheath surrounding the tendon in a finger becomes inflamed. This makes it difficult for the tendon to move smoothly, causing pain and difficulty straightening the finger.
A simple exercise is to place the finger on the edge of a table and gently pull the hand down, straightening the affected finger. In another exercise called tendon gliding, the patient spreads their fingers and then bends them to touch the palm of their hand. This exercise helps lubricate the tendon sheaths.
