A ketogenic diet is a very low-carbohydrate diet that focuses on foods that are high in protein and fat while cutting carbs to fewer than 60 grams each day. Up to 75 percent of daily caloric intake on this diet should come from fats.
Up to 25 percent of the daily caloric intake is protein, while up to 10 percent is carbohydrates in the ketogenic diet. Because of the restrictions, meats and cheeses make up a large portion of the diet. Butter, heavy whipping cream and oils are also key components in cooking. Whole eggs, beef, poultry and seafood provide large amounts of protein, while bacon, sausage, animal fats and nuts have ample healthy fats. Protein powders are often added in as supplements to meet protein goals.
Although some fruits and vegetables have to be avoided due to large amounts of carbs, many are allowed in the diet. Avocado, leafy green vegetables, broccoli and cucumbers are some allowed vegetables. Root vegetables and squashes are higher in carbs and sugar and are typically avoided in keto recipes. These include potatoes, carrots and summer squash. Unsweetened liquids, such as coffee, tea, broth and water are options for drinks while sticking to the diet.
