People with arthritis should avoid products with fructose or sucrose. Saturated fats, such as cheese, pizza, red meats, pasta dishes and grain-based desserts, trigger inflammation of fatty tissue and may worsen arthritis. People with arthritis should also avoid trans fats present in fried products, frozen breakfast foods, donuts, crackers, stick margarines and processed snack food. Foods made with hydrogenated oils increase inflammation, too.
Omega-6 fatty acids are often necessary for development and growth, but excess consumption of this acid without a balance of omega-6 and omega-3 can cause the body to produce chemicals that promote inflammation, notes the Arthritis Foundation. People with arthritis should avoid foods containing omega-6 fatty acids, such as salad dressings, mayonnaise, peanuts, and grape seed, vegetable, corn, soy and peanut oils.
