The Miracle Mineral Supplement, or MMS, is an alternative medicine developed by Jim Humble to treat a wide variety of physical ailments, notably malaria and cancer. In 2010, the FDA issued a warning against MMS, noting that chlorine dioxide is an industrial-grade bleach that is not safe for human consumption.
A 28 percent solution of sodium chlorite in distilled water, MMS is purported to kill diseased tissue and pathogens while leaving healthy tissue unaffected. To use MMS, patients mix it with another chemical, usually citric acid, to yield chlorine dioxide, the active ingredient that supposedly neutralizes disease. Despite the popularity of MMS in some alternative medicine circles, the safety and efficacy of chlorine dioxide treatment have been largely condemned by the medical and scientific communities.
