What Is in Imodium?

Imodium is an over-the-counter medication containing loperamide hydrochloride, the active ingredient that controls diarrhea, as reported by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The drug slows transit time through the intestines and lowers the volume of fecal discharge.

Individuals may take Imodium for chronic diarrhea related to inflammatory bowel disease and for acute diarrhea related to food intolerance, viral and bacterial infections and excessive alcohol or caffeine, according to the manufacturer's Imodium website. Patients should not take Imodium for stomach pain without diarrhea, bacterial enterocolitis, acute ulcerative colitis, pseudomembranous colitis or acute dysentery, warns the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
