The Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method hypothesizes that by eating certain foods that are high in protein, the body can be encouraged to burn fat reserves rather than carbohydrates, leading to weight loss. The high protein prevents the body from tapping into muscle mass for energy.
The diet severely restricts simple and complex sugars until the desired weight loss is achieved. By lowering carbohydrate intake, the Ideal Protein diet triggers ketosis, a metabolic state that occurs when the body begins to burn through fat resources. To prevent malnutrition, the Ideal Protein diet allows use of supplements to maintain calcium, magnesium, potassium and other vital nutrients.
Ideal Protein is broken into four phases. The first phase concentrates on behavior, limiting the amount of permissible foods to break bad eating habits and cravings. The next phase loosens the restrictions. The third phase reintroduces healthy carbohydrates and dairy products, while the final phase emphasizes maintenance and long-term weight loss.
The Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method was created by Dr. Tran Tien who states that insulin dysfunction caused by overindulgence in saturated fats and sugars is the root cause of obesity. The diet and meal plan are based off of studies conducted by the Harvard Medical School during the 1970s.
