Shoes should not have heels higher than an inch, and shoes with a back should have a sturdy heel counter to secure the foot in position.
Individuals may stretch their existing shoes at a shoe repair shop to help open up room and prevent painful rubbing, says WebMD. They can also protect their bunions with moleskin or felt patches to create a soft barrier between the sensitive area and the shoe.
Wearing a splint at night to align the toe may help ease discomfort, suggests Harvard Health Publications. Massage, ultrasound therapy, whirlpool baths and warm soaks may also alleviate the symptoms of irritated bunions.
