Having healthy bowel habits is the first method for treating hemorrhoids at home, according to WebMD. Over-the-counter pain relievers, application of ice and sitz baths can also help.
Healthy bowel habits include blotting the anus with toilet paper, either moistened with water or a cleansing agent, after going to the toilet. Pre-moistened wipes can also be used. Sometimes, it is recommended to avoid rubbing the anus entirely, instead using a shower or bidet to cleanse the area, according to WebMD. Soaking the area in a warm bath, or sitz bath, for 15 minutes several times a day can also help relieve symptoms.
Pain and swelling can be alleviated with aspirin, naproxen or ibuprofen. Acetaminophen can also provide pain relief. Putting ice on the area several times a day, followed by warm compresses, can also help. It is also recommended to keep pressure off the hemorrhoids as much as possible.
