Garlic is a well-known home remedy for fighting the bacterial infection and inflammation of an abscess, according to Earth Clinic. A gum abscess is a type of dental abscess.
Garlic contains several sulfuric compounds, including allicin, that can combat the bacterial infection and inflammation of an abscess, claims Earth Clinic. According to Umpah.com, allicin is both an antibiotic and an anesthetic, or pain killer. Umpah.com suggests making a garlic mouthwash out of four crushed cloves of garlic, a teaspoon of salt and hot water. Crushed garlic can also be combined with salt or peanut butter and applied to the affected area before rinsing with warm water.
In another remedy, a garlic clove is cut in half and placed directly against the affected tooth/gum area, and it is gently rubbed for seven to 10 minutes before being chewed and swallowed. Alternatively, crushed garlic can be combined with yogurt and ingested. If fresh garlic is unavailable, garlic powder can be applied to the affected area with the use of a moistened Q-tip. Umpah.com also recommends visiting a dentist, however, because an abscess can lead to complications.
A dental abscess is a collection of pus in a tooth or nearby structure, and it is usually caused by a bacterial infection. A periapical abscess starts in the dental pulp, states Patient.co.uk. A periodontal abscess, on the other hand, starts in the supporting structures of the teeth, such as the periodontium between the tooth and the gum.
